Outdoor Interpreter Internship

A summer of growth in the outdoors

 Trail Blazing Interpreters is partnering with Aspen Camp to offer a unique Outdoor Interpreter Internship for two emerging interpreters during Summer 2026. In exchange for free housing and meals at Aspen Camp, interns will gain hands-on outdoor interpreting skills while living in a fully immersive, signing-rich environment.

Aspen Camp

Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

For over 50 years, Aspen Camp has been a transformative space for thousands of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, youth, and adults from across the country. Nestled on 17 acres along the scenic Snowmass Creek near Aspen, Colorado, our camp provides immersive experiential and educational programs that foster self-awareness, critical thinking, and skills for future employment. From elementary-age explorers to outdoor-loving adults, Aspen Camp offers a diverse range of opportunities designed to empower, connect, and inspire.

Summer 2026 at Aspen Camp

Our internship is more than just interpreting—it’s an immersive experience in the rhythm of summer camp life, complete with professional growth, outdoor adventure, and Deaf community connection.

May 25 – June 5: Staff Training

Interns will begin with staff training and orientation. You’ll have the chance to:

  • Participate in several off-campus excursions (rafting, climbing, etc.)
  • Get familiar with activities before you’re expected to interpret them
  • Build relationships with camp staff and prep for the season ahead

June 8 – July 15: Camp Sessions

Each camp session focuses on a different age group—and is packed with adventure!

  • Session 1: June 8–20 – Teen Camp (Ages 15–17)
  • Session 2: June 21–July 1 – Middle Youth (Ages 12–14)
  • Session 3: July 2–9 – Kid Camp (Ages 8–11)
  • Family Camp: July 10–13 – A mix of Deaf and hearing families

Off-Campus Activities

During Sessions 1–3, campers will head out for daily adventures, and interpreters will be expected to accompany and interpret for these off-site programs:

  • Rafting
  • Ropes Course
  • Indoor Rock Climbing
  • Hiking
  • Horseback Riding
  • Caving
  • Coop Farming
  • Recreation Center Outings
  • July 4th Parade in Town
  • Outdoor Concerts
  • Glenwood Hot Springs Pool

On-Campus Programming

On-campus activities are generally Deaf-led, and interpretation is not always necessary. However, interpreters may be asked to support:

  • Parent drop-off/pick-up
  • Visiting guests (e.g., firefighters or first responders)
  • Family Camp events as needed

What You’ll Get

  • Free housing at Aspen Camp for the duration of your internship (May 25th to July 15th)
  • Hands-on interpreting experience in a Deaf camp environment
  • Mentorship from Deaf professionals and experienced outdoor interpreters
  • Networking with leaders in the outdoor and interpreting fields
  • Certificate of completion

What We’re Looking For

  • Interpreters (or students close to graduation) who are:
    • Excited about interpreting in outdoor education and recreation settings
    • Comfortable living in a shared space with campers and staff in a sign-rich environment
    • Flexible and ready to work with a wide range of ages and signing skill levels
  • Commitment: May 25th to July 15th, 2026
  • Must be 21 years old or older to apply
